  • Team Overview

    Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries. We regulate the TV, radio, fixed-line telecoms, mobile telecoms and postal sectors, plus the radio spectrum which enables wireless devices to operate.

    The Standards and Audience Protection team are within Ofcom’s Content Standards, Licensing and Enforcement Department and are responsible for defining and enforcing content policy and standards to ensure that audiences are protected. Ofcom currently licenses around 2,000 television and radio broadcasters and has statutory duties to set and enforce standards for the content broadcast on those services. Ofcom also has duties to ensure that on demand programme services are regulated to the required standards. Our key role in this area is to ensure that appropriate protections are offered to audiences in an effective and timely way.

    Purpose of the Role

    We are looking for a fluent English speaker to watch and listen to TV and radio programmes broadcast in Urdu and translate the content into English.  The role will also involve assessing content against the Broadcasting Code and assisting on case and policy work.

    Requirements of the Role

    • Produce accurate, written word-for-word translations from Urdu into English of content broadcast in programmes on TV and radio channels.
    • Produce accurate, written summaries in English of content, which identifies potential issues that Ofcom may wish to investigate. 
    • Provide in an impartial manner up to date cultural, political, religious background to programmes broadcast in Urdu on TV and radio channels. 
    • Occasionally act as an interpreter at meetings with broadcasters/stakeholders who speak Urdu.
    • Gain knowledge and an understanding of Ofcom’s rules and procedures, including the Broadcasting Code. 
    • Assist generally with Ofcom’s assessments and investigations into possible breaches of the Broadcasting Code, with a focus on those channels that broadcast in Urdu, identifying potentially difficult or sensitive issues and prioritising effectively.
    • Contribute to Ofcom’s standards and audience protection policy work and demonstrating agility and proactivity by working across areas of the department’s remit.

    Skills, knowledge and experience

    • Fluency (both spoken and written) in English and Urdu.
    • Able to take responsibility for effective and timely delivery of high quality work with minimal supervision (e.g. that all assigned translation work is proof checked).
    • Able to work independently, flexibly and in a culture of collaboration and trust.
    • Able to participate in debates and discussions, contributing ideas and insight.
    • Able to identify risks, escalating when necessary.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

    Desirable Skills / Experience

    • translate Modern Standard (“MS”) Arabic, North African (“NA”) Arabic and/or Punjabi into English;
    • demonstrate experience of working in broadcasting or journalism and a keen interest in news and current affairs would be preferable; and/or
    • demonstrate knowledge of the regulatory framework and an understanding of the broadcasting and on-demand sectors.
