    As the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom is at the heart of a sector which not only impacts on everyone’s lives but also plays a leading role in the UK economy.

     

    This apprenticeship opportunity will see you provide support to the Financial Economics team through applying modelling and data analysis techniques. The Financial Economics team is a team of financial analysts, accountants and economic modellers that sits in Ofcom’s Competition Group and ensures that Ofcom’s decisions are informed by robust financial and economic insight and advice. The Competition Group has responsibility for a number of areas of regulation and enforcement on providers of telecoms, broadcasting and postal services.

     

    We are looking for a data analyst apprentice to contribute to our decision making process by providing analysis relating to key issues in Ofcom’s work programme. This is an opportunity to work in areas that have a real impact on the UK economy and the lives of the people living in the UK. The apprentice should have an interested in learning about the communications sector and learning new ways of thinking about data. In addition to the apprenticeship training, Ofcom offers an extensive internal training programme that the apprentice would have the opportunity to access. Alongside working in the Competition Group, the apprentice would have opportunities to experience placements in other Ofcom groups in order to experience the full range of work that we undertake.

     

    We expect the apprenticeship to last for 24 months with the option of transitioning to a permanent role at Ofcom assuming satisfactory performance

     

    Examples of recent projects undertaken by the Financial Economics team

    • Protecting vulnerable people by reducing the price BT can charge to consumers who only use their landline to make calls;
    • Understanding the cost of providing good quality broadband services to the whole country.
    • Ensuring the BBC doesn’t use revenue from the licence fee to support commercial activities.
    • Making sure Royal Mail will be able to continue delivering everyone’s mail.

    What you will be doing

    • Help Ofcom make decisions by providing insightful data analysis and modelling.
    • Support the development of new approaches to modelling and data analysis.
    • Liaise with colleagues across economics, finance, technical and policy disciplines to ensure our data analysis meets their needs
    • Produce documents and presentations explaining quantitative analysis for those projects you are directly involved in.

    Essential Skills / Experience

    • An interest in making the UK communications sector work better for everyone.
    • A good eye for detail.
    • Able to work as part of a team.
    • Ability to quickly acquire working knowledge of new software/analysis techniques.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Be ready for a professional and corporate environment.
    • An interest in programming would be an advantage but is not essential.

    Qualifications

     

    3 A-levels with at least one in a numerate discipline.

    The successful candidate will be provided with the opportunity to complete a fully certified Level 4 data analysis apprenticeship.
