The data analyst apprentice role at Ofcom can provide all of this and more.

As a data analyst apprentice, you will be part of the market research team at Ofcom, working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams to help ensure our policies have a sound evidence base and deliver a real, long term benefit to consumers in communications markets. For example, you could:

  • Help to support research managers and statistical specialists to decide on appropriate sampling and statistical analysis across a range of research projects, particularly for tracking surveys and more complex research projects
  • Learn how to advise on the practical application of statistical and modelling techniques with consumer data, particularly for projects involving economic concepts and analysis
  • Learn how to guide project team members on the appropriate use of stats
  • Provide ad-hoc analytical support as required using a range of large existing Ofcom data sets e.g. media literacy, technology tracker, switching tracker
  • Learn how to project manage research projects, from commissioning through to publication and take ownership of specific elements within projects
  • Work closely with the audience analysis team to gather data on broadcasters using industry currency measures such as the BARB establishment survey
  • Work closely with other colleagues on tools to allow Ofcom to analyse information shared by users on social media platforms
  • Be closely involved in the commission and managing of analysis from suppliers

Essential Skills / Experience


A wide-ranging training programme would be available to you. This would include specialist data analysis training on software such as SNAP, SPSS, BARB and qualitative and quantitative market research methodologies. Ofcom would also sponsor membership of relevant professional organisations, such as the Market Research Society.

Ofcom also offers a large internal training programme to support colleagues’ development. Sessions include written and oral communication skills and stakeholder engagement.


You will primarily be placed within the Market Research team working both with research and intelligence colleagues. Possible placements include Consumer Policy, Competition Group, and the Technology team or externally with one of our research agencies from our Framework. During your two years on the programme, there would be the opportunity to work with a wide variety of teams within Ofcom, this could include being seconded or shadowing other team/colleagues.

Entry requirements:

  • A strong interest in data and analysis. Potentially, understanding of statistics-based or mathematics based problems would be preferable.
  • Must be 18 or over (restrictions of content assessment)
