About the Job

Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, with responsibilities across television, radio, postal services, telecommunications and wireless communications services.  We wish to appoint a member to the Ofcom Advisory Committee for England. 


The Committee provides advice to Ofcom colleagues about the interests and opinions of people living in England and its diverse communities on communications matters including television and radio broadcasting, postal services, telecoms and spectrum issues.  The Committee works to ensure that our conclusions are informed by the widest possible understanding of the experience of consumers/citizens in England, capturing the distinctive needs of people living in the different English regions. 

Essential Skills / Experience

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • A good understanding of issues affecting the communications sector or an ability to acquire it rapidly;
  • An ability to understand complex consumer, citizen, micro-business, regulatory, economic and wider business issues;
  • An understanding of Ofcom’s role and responsibilities in an increasingly complex political landscape
  • An understanding of England’s and your region’s economy, society and culture
  • The ability to understand and articulate the diverse needs and views of citizens and consumers in England and your region
  • Strong communication skills to make an effective contribution to the discussions of a high level public body.


We would be particularly interested in hearing from candidates with a background in the telecommunications industry.


We want the Committee’s membership to reflect the range of diverse areas and communities in the English regions to give as wide a geographical and social view as possible.

Further Information

The Committee meets up to 5 times per year, usually in London and all members are asked to commit to a total of 12 days per year to this work for which we will pay an annual fee and reasonable expenses.
