Ofcom is the converged regulator for the UK’s communications industries with responsibilities across television, radio, telecoms, radio spectrum management and post, and a key role to play in meeting the growing challenges of the UK communciations sector. Ofcom is a highly regarded organisation with a warm culture, strong values and a great working environment.
We are seeking applications to join a professional, cohesive and fun legal team of approximately 40 qualified lawyers with diverse experience and expertise. The legal team is central to Ofcom’s work, playing a critical role in the creation and implementation of communications regulatory policy, as well as advising on enforcement and investigations, and conducting litigation before the Competition Appeal Tribunal, the High Court and appeal courts.
The role is exciting and wide-ranging, covering the full spectrum of Ofcom’s work and requiring you to take on diverse projects, including conducting litigation. You will work on complex and high profile matters which are often the subject of political and public interest and debate, and which have the potential to raise new and significant points of law.
You will work in collaborative, multi-disciplinary project teams including policy advisors, economists, accountants and engineers. Depending on the nature of individual projects, you will sometimes work as part of a team of lawyers, and sometimes more independently (with support from a legal peer reviewer and/or senior legal colleagues). You will also attend meetings with government departments, industry stakeholders and other regulators.
You will be expected to work hard and in an agile manner, and to meet challenging deadlines when necessary, but encouraged to maintain a sense of perspective and a healthy work/life balance.
Recent examples of matters that members of the legal team have advised on include the regulation of the BBC, universal broadband, the reform of BT Openreach, auctioning new spectrum for 5G mobile services, the imposition of dark fibre to promote competition in high speed business services, the impact of Brexit on the communications sector, and the Fox/Sky Merger.
Please note that Ofcom will offer roles dependent on the nature of a candidate’s experience as a whole, so candidates are not required to specify whether they are applying for an associate or senior associate role.
Ofcom offers competitive salaries plus pensions and flexible benefits package.
If you are interested in the role, we invite you to submit a CV and short covering letter explaining why you are interested in the role and why you are suited to working for Ofcom. Please provide any other information you think we should have (for example, if you want to work part time).
